Finally caught Broadway's longest running and most popular musical!
Andrew Lloyd Webber's phenomenal hit first burst onto the London stage 20 years ago, and continues to play full houses nightly in London, New York and around the world.
Due to over-whelming responses at the Esplanade, it's extending its stay till 20th May!
The Phantom Of The Opera is a heart-wrenching story of the mysterious "Angel of Music" who lives beneath the Paris Opera House. The hideously disfigured Phantom falls in love with the young singer Christine, devoting himself to creating a new opera star while exercising a reign of terror over the Opera House's occupants. The musical opens with an auction held 1911 where the contents of the Opera House are being auctioned off. As the auctioneer displays Opera House Chandelier, he explains its connection with the Legend of The Phantom Of The Opera.
With a flash of light, velvet curtains raised as linens fall to reveal the Opera House's gold pillars and stage, the audience is flung back in time with the Chandelier, when the Opera House was at its height.
The replica of The Chandelier, is made up of 6,000 beads, consisting of 35 beads to each string. It is 3 metres wide and weighs a ton.
With 130 cast, crew and orchestra members, spectacular sets and more than 230 costumes, The Phantom Of The Opera contains some of Andrew Lloyd Webber's most famous and stirring music."Music Of The Night" being my favourite as The Phantom rows the boat through the river (created with dry ice, fog & smoke machines) under bridges, accompanied by candle stands, leading Christine to his underground lair.
The second act opens at the Grand Masquerade Ball, which is performed at the Opera House's steps. The costumes were very elaborate and The Phantom disguised himself as the Red Death. Each performance has 230 costumes, 14 dressers, 120 automated cues, 22 scene changes, 281 candles, and uses 250 kg of dry ice and 10 fog and smoke machines.
The Phantom OF The Opera is a world-wide sensation which wil take audiences on an unrivalled musical theatre journey.
